It has a strong undergraduate business identity, accounting is one of its better-known fields, and employers tend to recruit there with confidence for public accounting, corporate finance, consulting-adjacent roles, and leadership development programs. The alumni network is also a real advantage, especially if you may want geographic flexibility after graduation.

UMass Amherst, through Isenberg, is absolutely credible and can prepare students well for accounting careers. It is especially practical if you want to work in the Northeast and are proactive about internships, faculty connections, and recruiting events. Students can do well from UMass, including into accounting firms, but the path usually depends a bit more on taking initiative rather than benefiting from the same level of built-in national pull that Notre Dame has.

In terms of preparation, both schools can give you the coursework you need, but Notre Dame is more likely to offer the stronger overall professional ecosystem around accounting: employer access, alumni reach, and perceived prestige with recruiters. If the price difference is manageable, Notre Dame is the better choice for accounting. If UMass is dramatically cheaper, it remains a smart option because accounting is a field where strong grades, internships, CPA progress, and recruiting hustle can still matter a lot.
