Is UMass Amherst or Santa Clara University better for getting Silicon Valley internships?

For a student whose main goal is to build Silicon Valley connections during the academic year, Santa Clara University has the more direct advantage. It is located in Santa Clara, in the middle of the region’s tech employers, so attending company events, meeting alumni locally, and working part-time or during the school year is more realistic. Its smaller private-school environment can also make faculty, alumni, and career-networking relationships feel more accessible.

UMass Amherst is a strong choice for a student who wants a larger, well-regarded computer science program and is comfortable pursuing Silicon Valley internships through national recruiting and summer applications. Its CS students do reach major technology companies, but Amherst is far from the Bay Area, so most Silicon Valley opportunities would be summer internships rather than casual local networking or semester-time roles.

Santa Clara’s location matters most early in college, when personal referrals, meetups, startup events, and nearby employer programs can help a student get traction before having an extensive résumé. It can be particularly appealing for someone interested in startups, product-oriented work, or exploring several Bay Area companies while enrolled.

UMass may make more sense for a student who prefers the scale and course breadth of a large public research university and plans to compete for internships based primarily on technical preparation. In that case, strong projects, interview preparation, and early applications can still open Silicon Valley doors. But for immediate, repeated access to the Silicon Valley ecosystem itself, Santa Clara has the clearer edge.
