University of Vermont vs Boston University for finance careers: which is better for recruiting and internships?
I’m trying to decide between UVM and BU and finance is the main career path I’m considering. I know both schools are solid, but I’m mostly trying to understand which one has the stronger reputation and recruiting access for finance jobs and internships.
I want to make a choice that gives me the best shot at getting internships early and breaking into finance after college.

The biggest practical tradeoff is direct access versus cost and campus feel: Boston University puts you in Boston, with far more nearby finance firms, alumni density, and semester-time internship access, while UVM offers a more traditional campus environment but a noticeably less plugged-in finance pipeline. For finance recruiting and internships specifically, BU has the clearer edge. Its location matters a lot because being in Boston makes networking, informational interviews, and in-semester internships much easier than trying to do the same from Burlington.
BU also has stronger name recognition in major finance markets and more built-in exposure to employers in banking, asset management, corporate finance, and related business roles. Students there can realistically pursue part-time internships during the academic year, which is a real advantage if you want experience before junior summer. That kind of access often compounds over time because one early internship can lead to the next.
UVM can still work for finance, especially for corporate finance, regional firms, or students who are highly proactive about networking into bigger markets. But it is not the same level of target-rich environment. You would likely need to be more intentional about using alumni outreach, traveling for networking, and building experience through off-campus summers rather than relying on a dense local recruiting scene.
If your priority is maximizing finance recruiting access, internship volume, and proximity to employers, BU is the stronger option. UVM becomes more compelling if the cost difference is substantial and you are comfortable creating your own pipeline, but on finance career outcomes alone, BU gives you the better launch point.
