Chapman vs UC Berkeley for prestige: which is considered more prestigious for college admissions and jobs?

I’m a junior trying to understand how much school name matters when people talk about prestige. I keep seeing Chapman and UC Berkeley come up in different conversations, and I’m not sure how they’re viewed compared to each other.

I’m mostly asking in terms of how admissions officers, employers, and other people generally perceive the two schools.

UC Berkeley is viewed as much more prestigious than Chapman in national reputation, academic standing, and name recognition with employers and graduate schools. Chapman is respected, especially in Southern California and in certain programs, but it does not operate in the same prestige tier.

For a student who wants broad name recognition almost anywhere, Berkeley has the clearer advantage. Berkeley also benefits from a very large alumni network and a long-established reputation for producing strong students across many disciplines.

Chapman makes more sense for a student drawn to a smaller private-university environment, closer faculty access, and certain standout areas such as film, television, performing arts, and some business-related paths. In those circles, especially in Southern California, Chapman can be well regarded and may open doors through industry connections. But that is a more specialized kind of reputation, not the same level of across-the-board prestige that Berkeley has.

If the question is purely prestige in admissions and jobs, Berkeley is the one people will usually see as more elite and more academically powerful. Chapman can still be a very good school and the better personal fit for some students, but in head-to-head perception, UC Berkeley is not close to Chapman on prestige.
