What percent of UC Berkeley students come from California?

I'm starting to make a list of colleges I want to apply to and I'm looking pretty seriously at UC Berkeley. I'm curious about how many of the students there are actually from California versus out-of-state or international.

If anyone knows the actual percentage or has seen some recent data on this, I'd really appreciate it. Just trying to get a sense of the student body and what the chances are for out-of-state applicants to feel like they fit in. Also, if there's any data on how this breakdown looks for undergrads specifically, that would be super helpful.

Anyone have info or a link to official stats?

For UC Berkeley, the majority of undergraduates are indeed California residents. According to the most recent Common Data Set and university enrollment reports from Fall 2023, about 73-74% of enrolled undergraduates at UC Berkeley are from California. Out-of-state students make up roughly 13-14%, while international students account for about 13% as well.

These figures can shift slightly year-to-year, but California residents consistently make up at least two-thirds to three-quarters of the undergraduate population. For example, in Fall 2022, the breakdown was about 74% California residents, 14% out-of-state, and 12% international among undergrads. So, when you're walking around campus, most students will have strong ties to California, but there's definitely a significant presence of students from other states and countries, too.

As an out-of-state applicant, you certainly won't be alone—there are plenty of other non-California students to connect with, and the university offers groups and events designed to help students from all backgrounds build community. One example is the "UC Berkeley Out-of-State Student Association," which organizes meetups and networking events specifically for students not from California.

If you want to see the data directly, UC Berkeley posts its enrollment statistics every year on the UC Information Center website or through their own Office of Planning and Analysis dashboards. Those databases typically let you filter by residency (CA resident, nonresident domestic, international) and sometimes even by class year.

In summary: expect roughly three out of four Berkeley undergrads to be from California, but with a healthy mix of out-of-state and international students on campus.
