UC Berkeley is usually perceived as the more intense and less buffered academic environment, while WashU is rigorous in a more structured and student-supported way. At Berkeley, large intro classes, faster pacing in many departments, and tougher curves can make the workload feel more sink-or-swim. At WashU, students still work very hard, but classes often feel more accessible because of smaller sections, closer faculty contact, and a campus culture that puts more emphasis on support.

One major difference is class size and how that shapes day-to-day pressure. Berkeley has many very large lower-division courses, especially in STEM, economics, and popular social sciences, so it can be easier to feel anonymous and harder to get individualized help unless you actively seek it out.
