University of Richmond vs. Colgate for pre-med: which is better for students preparing for medical school?

I’m a junior trying to narrow down colleges, and both of these schools are on my list because I like the size and campus feel. I’m interested in pre-med and want to understand which one tends to be the stronger choice for building a good path toward medical school.

I’m mostly trying to compare them in terms of support for pre-med students and how well they set you up for med school.

University of Richmond has the edge for pre-med. Its location in Richmond gives students direct access to major clinical settings, and that kind of proximity matters when you are trying to build sustained shadowing, volunteering, and patient-facing experience during the school year. Richmond also has a strong advising structure and enough flexibility across its liberal arts setting to support the full pre-med course sequence without making everything feel narrowly pre-professional.

The biggest practical difference is clinical access. At Richmond, being in and around a real metro area makes it easier to find regular hospital volunteering, physician shadowing, and health-related service without depending as heavily on summer breaks or long transportation logistics. Colgate can still place students into meaningful experiences, but Hamilton is much more remote, so the path to hands-on medical exposure often takes more planning.

Advising is another point in Richmond’s favor. Richmond is known for close faculty attention and structured support, which is useful for pre-med students managing sequencing in biology, chemistry, physics, research, service, and the MCAT timeline. Colgate also offers strong academic support, but Richmond’s setup tends to feel a little more naturally connected to the kinds of off-campus experiences medical schools like to see.

Research is not a wash, but it is not the deciding factor here either. Both schools can give undergraduates access to professors and lab work because neither is so large that opportunities disappear into graduate programs. The difference is that Richmond pairs those small-college academics with easier access to clinical ecosystems, which makes it a more complete pre-med platform for many students.

Colgate still has real strengths, especially if you want a classic residential liberal arts experience and are comfortable being proactive about finding medical exposure. But for building a smoother year-round path to med school preparation, Richmond is the more favorable option.
