Is American University or Syracuse University better for communications majors?

I’m a high school junior trying to narrow down colleges for communications, and these two keep coming up on my list. I know both schools have strong reputations, but I’m trying to understand which one is generally considered the better fit for someone planning to study communications.

For communications, Syracuse usually has the stronger national reputation, especially through the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. American University is also a solid option, but it tends to stand out more for students who want communications closely tied to politics, advocacy, international issues, or Washington-based media work.

Syracuse fits students who want a communication program that feels like a specialized professional school from early on. Newhouse is known for hands-on training, student media, strong alumni connections in media industries, and a campus culture where communications is a major academic centerpiece.

American fits students who want communications in a policy-heavy, DC-centered environment. Its School of Communication benefits a lot from location, and that matters if you are interested in political communication, strategic communication, documentary work, public affairs media, advocacy campaigns, or internships during the school year.

The social setting is different too, and that can affect fit more than people expect. Syracuse has more of a classic residential campus experience with big school spirit and a larger communications identity on campus. American tends to attract students who are more internship-oriented, politically engaged, and urban-professional in how they approach college.

So in plain terms, Syracuse is more often the standout name specifically for communications as a field. American makes the most sense when your version of communications is closely connected to DC, public affairs, and real-time access to political and nonprofit media work.
