Is American University or Rice University better for STEM majors?

Rice University has the stronger overall STEM reputation. It is widely known for high-level strength in math, natural sciences, and engineering, and its research profile in those areas is much deeper than American University’s. Rice also benefits from being in Houston, with close ties to the Texas Medical Center, NASA, and a large concentration of science and engineering employers and labs.

One major differentiator is academic breadth and depth in STEM. Rice has a much more established presence across core STEM fields, especially in engineering, physics, chemistry, biosciences, computer science, and mathematics. American University has solid programs and can be a good option for certain students, but it is not typically the school people point to first for a broad, high-powered STEM environment.
