Is Clemson or Notre Dame more widely known nationally?

I’m trying to understand how these two schools compare in overall name recognition outside of just college sports. I’ve heard both mentioned a lot, but I’m not sure which one people would generally be more familiar with if I bring it up in conversation.

I’m mainly asking about broad public recognition, not which one is better academically.

The biggest practical difference is that Notre Dame has a much broader national identity beyond athletics, while Clemson’s name recognition is strong but more tied to football and especially stronger in the South. In ordinary conversation across the U.S., more people are likely to immediately recognize Notre Dame as a university. Its national visibility has been built over a long time through academics, athletics, media presence, and a distinct institutional identity.

Notre Dame is one of the few colleges that many people who are not closely following higher education can still identify right away. It has unusually wide cultural recognition, partly because of its long history, alumni network, national applicant reach, and brand that extends well beyond its region. Even outside college sports, it tends to register as a household-name school.

Clemson is definitely well known, especially in the Southeast and among people who follow college athletics, engineering, or large public universities. But its recognition is not usually as universal in non-academic, non-sports settings. A lot of its recent national visibility has been boosted by football success, whereas Notre Dame’s recognition is more deeply embedded and less dependent on one area.

So if the question is simply which name is more widely known nationally, Notre Dame is the clearer answer. Clemson is a recognizable major university, but Notre Dame has the stronger all-around public name recognition across regions and age groups.
