How do UVA and Washington University in St. Louis compare for business school placement after undergrad?
I’m trying to figure out which school would give me a stronger path into business school after college. I’m interested in the kind of placement each one gets into MBA or other graduate business programs, especially for a student who wants to build a solid business background as an undergrad.
I know both schools are well regarded, but I want to understand how they compare for long-term business school placement.

For long-term business school placement, UVA usually has the clearer edge for a student who wants an undergraduate experience already tied closely to business. McIntire is one of the most established undergrad business programs in the country, and UVA also has a very large alumni base in consulting, finance, tech, and other fields that commonly feed into top MBA programs. That matters because MBA admissions depends heavily on what you do after college, not just the college name itself.
UVA fits the student who wants a strong pre-professional business ecosystem from the start. If you are aiming for banking, consulting, corporate strategy, or brand management, UVA offers a very recognizable pipeline, especially on the East Coast, and the combination of McIntire coursework, recruiting access, and alumni connections can make it easier to land the kind of early-career roles that later strengthen an MBA application. Even outside McIntire, UVA has a broad campus culture around business-related careers.
WashU makes more sense for the student who wants flexibility, a more cross-disciplinary academic environment, or a path that is not narrowly business from day one. Olin is well regarded, and WashU students do place into strong jobs and later into respected MBA programs, but the school is less known specifically for undergrad business placement than UVA. Its strength is often in giving students room to combine business with fields like economics, data, healthcare, design, or policy, which can be valuable for specialized master’s programs or for distinctive MBA profiles later.
For MBA placement specifically, neither school sends students straight there in large numbers because top MBA programs want several years of work experience first. So the real question is which school better positions you for strong post-college outcomes. On that front, UVA tends to offer the more direct and established business track, while WashU is very good for students building a more customized or interdisciplinary route.
