Michigan vs ETH Zurich for computer science: which is better overall?

For computer science, neither is simply “better overall” in every situation. ETH Zurich is one of the strongest technical universities in the world and is especially compelling if you want a deeply theoretical, math-heavy CS education in a highly research-driven environment. Michigan is outstanding too, but it usually makes more sense for students who want a broader university experience, more flexibility across disciplines, and especially strong recruiting into the U.S. tech market.

ETH tends to fit the student who is excited by an intense technical culture from day one. It is known for rigor in math, algorithms, systems, and foundational engineering, and the academic environment can feel more specialized and less hand-holding than a typical U.S. campus. If you already know you want a serious technical education and are comfortable with a more independent structure, ETH has exceptional prestige in that lane.

Michigan fits the student who wants top-tier CS within a large, resource-rich American university. You get excellent computer science, but also easier access to interdisciplinary options, student organizations, campus life, entrepreneurship, and a wide alumni network in the U.S. That matters a lot if you may combine CS with business, design, robotics, public policy, or want the classic residential college experience.

Career goals are a major separator. For jobs in the United States, Michigan usually gives you the more straightforward pipeline through internships, on-campus recruiting, alumni connections, and employer familiarity. ETH has outstanding global respect, especially in Europe and research circles, but the path into U.S. industry can be less direct simply because of geography, hiring pipelines, and visa logistics.

For research-oriented students, both are excellent. ETH may have the edge in pure technical intensity and European research prestige, while Michigan offers tremendous breadth and scale across labs and adjacent fields.
