Is Purdue or UIC worth it for college?

Between Purdue and UIC, Purdue is usually the one people see as having the stronger overall national reputation, especially in engineering, computer science, business, and other technical fields. UIC can absolutely be worth it too, but its value tends to stand out most for students who want an urban campus, lower cost as an in-state Illinois student, or strong access to Chicago internships and jobs while enrolled.

Purdue makes the most sense for a student who wants a more traditional residential college experience and cares a lot about broad name recognition outside the Midwest. West Lafayette feels like a classic college town, and Purdue has a well-established employer pipeline, especially in STEM. For some students, that combination makes the degree feel worth the price because the school’s reputation is clear and the campus experience is a big part of what they are paying for.

UIC fits a different kind of student well. It is often a smart choice for someone who wants to stay connected to a major city, commute or save money, and build career experience in Chicago during college. UIC is especially practical for students interested in health fields, public policy, business, or careers where being in the city and networking early can matter a lot. The degree may not carry the same broad prestige as Purdue in every field, but for the right student it can offer very strong return because of cost and location.

So whether each school is “worth it” depends a lot on your major and what you want your four years to feel like. If you are comparing value in terms of reputation alone, Purdue has the edge. If you are comparing value in terms of affordability, city access, and professional opportunities during the school year, UIC can be the more sensible investment.
