Is Purdue worth it compared with UW Madison for college?

UW Madison is the more balanced option across a wider range of disciplines and tends to offer a broader classic Big Ten college experience.

One real differentiator is academic emphasis. Purdue is unusually focused on hands-on technical education, and that shows up in the scale of its engineering culture, research infrastructure, and recruiting pipelines for STEM students. If you already know you want a technical path, Purdue often feels more purpose-built. UW Madison is also excellent in STEM, but it is less dominated by that one identity and may feel stronger if you want flexibility across fields like economics, political science, biology, journalism, or other areas outside engineering.

Another difference is campus environment. UW Madison has one of the most distinctive college settings in the country, with its location between lakes and right next to a lively state capital.
