Purdue or UCLA for mechanical engineering: which is better overall?

For undergraduate mechanical engineering specifically, Purdue is more often the school people point to first. Its College of Engineering has long been especially well known for hands-on engineering and a very established mechanical engineering pipeline. UCLA is also an excellent option, but it is usually seen as the broader elite university with a strong engineering school rather than the place most students single out as the most engineering-centered environment.

Purdue tends to fit the student who wants engineering to feel like the center of campus culture. Mechanical engineering there is large and visible. If you want a campus where a huge share of your peers are engineers and where the school’s identity is strongly tied to technical fields, Purdue has a real edge.

UCLA makes more sense for the student who wants top-tier engineering inside a more expansive university experience. Samueli is respected, and UCLA gives you access to strong research, a major city, and the resources of a highly prominent public university. For someone who values ME but also cares a lot about cross-disciplinary options, campus life in Los Angeles, or the overall UCLA brand across many fields, that can matter quite a bit.

If the question is purely which school has the stronger undergraduate mechanical engineering reputation, I’d give that to Purdue. If the question is which school offers the more rounded overall college experience while still giving you a very strong ME education, UCLA becomes more compelling. So on ME strength alone, Purdue has the clearer advantage.
