Is the University of Rochester or Carnegie Mellon more prestigious?

The biggest practical tradeoff is broad overall reputation versus highly concentrated name recognition. Carnegie Mellon tends to carry more immediate national prestige in the public mind, especially because of its standout visibility in computer science, engineering, drama, and design, while the University of Rochester is very well respected but usually seen as more understated and less brand-forward. Rochester has a strong academic reputation, excellent research opportunities, and real strength in areas like optics, engineering, music, and pre-med, but it is not talked about as often in casual prestige conversations.

If you mean overall prestige across all majors, Carnegie Mellon is usually viewed as the more prestigious of the two. Its name tends to land faster with employers, graduate programs, and people outside higher education, partly because several of its programs are nationally prominent and that raises the profile of the whole university. CMU also has a distinct identity that is easy for people to place, whereas Rochester is respected in a quieter, more academic way.

That said, the gap is not the kind where one school is elite and the other is ordinary. Rochester is a serious, selective research university with a strong faculty culture and a flexible curriculum through its open curriculum model.
