Carnegie Mellon offers a livelier urban setting and easier access to nearby Pittsburgh institutions, but its campus culture can feel more intense and professionally focused.

Rochester’s layout encourages a contained campus routine. Students can walk across the main campus quickly, spend time on the quads or river paths, and participate in campus events without needing to leave the university area. The surrounding city is accessible, but the River Campus itself feels distinctly separate from downtown Rochester, which gives it a traditional college-campus atmosphere.

Carnegie Mellon sits in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood, directly beside the University of Pittsburgh and close to major museums, parks, hospitals, restaurants, and coffee shops.
