How far is UC Berkeley from the beach?

I've been looking into colleges in California, and UC Berkeley is one of my top choices right now. I know the campus itself isn't right on the coast, but I was wondering how far the nearest beach actually is from the university?

Is it easy to get to the ocean for a day trip or even just a quick visit? I'm really into surfing and beach volleyball, so being near the water is kind of important to me. Anyone with experience living there – do students go to the beach often, or is it more of a major outing each time?

UC Berkeley isn’t right on the coast—it sits a few miles inland in the East Bay—but you still have plenty of options if you’re craving water. The closest beaches with ocean access are usually 30–45 minutes away by car, depending on traffic and where you’re headed.

For a classic sandy beach, many students go to Alameda Beach, which is about 25–30 minutes away. You can even get there by bus, so it’s one of the more accessible options without a car. Alameda has a relaxed, bay-front vibe, and the water is actually about 20 degrees warmer than the Pacific Ocean. Plus, the area is full of cute ice cream shops and little spots to explore—it’s a fun, low-key beach day. I grew up there, and it’s a spot I still recommend to Berkeley students who want an easy beach trip.

For ocean waves, Ocean Beach in San Francisco is roughly 45 minutes to an hour by car. It’s the go-to surf spot, although the water is very cold and the waves can be challenging. Pacifica Beach, about an hour away, is another favorite for surfing and hanging out—it has a friendly local scene and a laid-back beach town feel. For something more scenic and relaxed, students often make a day trip to Stinson Beach, about 1.5 hours away, which combines wide sandy beaches with nearby hiking trails.

If you don’t have a car, beach trips usually happen by carpooling with friends or through outdoor student clubs that organize surf and hiking outings.

That said, if you just want to swim or relax in water closer to campus, you have a few unique options. There’s Lake Anza in Tilden Park, up in the Berkeley Hills, which you can reach by bus. It’s a small, family-friendly lake that’s perfect for a quick swim or picnic. Right on campus, you’ll also find Strawberry Creek Pool—a beautiful, forested outdoor pool that feels almost magical, tucked into the redwoods. It’s part of the UC Berkeley recreation system, so students can use it as a convenient, aesthetic alternative to trekking out to the coast.

So while you won’t walk to the ocean after class like you might at UC Santa Barbara, Berkeley does give you plenty of access to water—from easy bus rides to Alameda’s warmer bayfront beach, to forest pools on campus, to weekend adventures at the Pacific Ocean.
