Case Western vs UC Berkeley for undergraduate research opportunities

I’m trying to compare Case Western and UC Berkeley mainly for undergrad research, not just overall rankings. I’m interested in how easy it is for students to get involved in research early, especially in STEM.

I know both schools have strong programs, but I’m having trouble understanding which one might offer more accessible or hands-on research opportunities for an undergrad.

For undergraduate research accessibility, Case Western has the edge. It is smaller, highly research-focused, and undergrads often find it easier to connect directly with faculty and labs early, especially in engineering, biology, chemistry, and biomedical fields. Its proximity to major medical and research institutions in University Circle, including the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals, also creates unusually direct access to hands-on STEM work.

One major differentiator is scale. Berkeley offers an enormous volume of research, but that comes with much more competition from graduate students, postdocs, and a very large undergraduate population. At Case Western, there are still strong graduate programs, but the student body is smaller and faculty interaction is typically more reachable, which matters a lot when you are trying to join a lab in your first or second year.

Another difference is the structure around undergraduate involvement. Berkeley has excellent formal programs and world-class labs, especially in EECS, physics, chemistry, bioengineering, and public health-adjacent research, but students often need to be proactive and persistent to break in. At Case Western, the path can feel less crowded and more personal, so getting meaningful responsibilities sooner is often more realistic rather than waiting behind a longer line.

The research environment itself also differs. Berkeley’s strength is breadth and prestige across nearly every STEM area, so if you already know a niche field and want access to a huge ecosystem of labs and institutes, it can be exceptional. Case Western stands out most in biomedical research, medical technology, and interdisciplinary science tied to its hospital partnerships, where undergrads can plug into active projects with strong mentoring.

For early, hands-on access, I would lean Case Western. Berkeley may offer higher-profile opportunities at the top end, but Case Western is often the easier place to actually start doing research quickly and build close faculty relationships from the beginning.
