Is Lehigh or Duke worth the money for undergrad?

I’m trying to decide whether a more expensive school is actually worth it for college. Lehigh and Duke are both options I’m looking at, but the price difference makes me wonder how much the name, network, and opportunities really matter later on.

I want to know how people think about return on investment for schools like these when choosing between cost and prestige.

Duke is more likely to justify a higher price tag for undergrad, mainly because its brand carries broader national reach, its recruiting pipeline is deeper across more industries, and its alumni network tends to open doors well beyond one region. That does not mean Lehigh is poor value, but when the question is whether paying more buys meaningfully more long-term opportunity, Duke has the stronger case.

One big difference is employer reach. Duke is a true national name, so its degree tends to travel more easily if you want flexibility across finance, consulting, tech, pre-med, policy, or graduate school paths. Lehigh is well regarded, especially in engineering, business, and parts of the Northeast, but its recognition is not as universally powerful in every market.

Another differentiator is the scale and consistency of opportunities on campus. Duke has unusually strong undergraduate research access, very visible internship pipelines, and a dense concentration of ambitious students that can matter in subtle ways over four years. That environment often creates more built-in momentum, especially for students still figuring out their direction.

The alumni network also matters, and here Duke again tends to offer more leverage. Its graduates are spread widely across major cities and industries, and the school has the kind of reputation that can help your resume get a closer look even from people with no personal connection to the university. Lehigh’s network can be loyal and effective, but it is typically narrower in geographic and industry reach.

The main caveat is cost level, not just cost difference. If Duke requires taking on heavy debt, the extra prestige can stop being worth it quickly, especially for careers that do not pay enough right after graduation to make those loans manageable. If the gap is manageable for your family, Duke is the one where the added money more often buys something real rather than just a nicer label.
