Is UT Austin or UVA better for investment banking recruiting?

I’m trying to decide between UT Austin and UVA and I’m interested in investment banking after college. I know both schools have strong reputations, but I’m trying to understand which one gives students a better path into banking recruiting and internships.

I’m mainly looking for the school that tends to have the stronger pipeline into investment banking.

UVA has the stronger overall pipeline into investment banking. McIntire is one of the best-known undergraduate business programs for IB placement, UVA has especially deep recruiting ties to New York banks, and its alumni network is very established in front-office finance roles.

One major differentiator is geography and employer concentration. UVA sits closer to the East Coast banking ecosystem, and that matters because a large share of undergraduate IB hiring still flows through New York and other East Coast offices. Banks know UVA well, and students aiming for summer analyst roles benefit from a long-standing, recognizable path from UVA into those firms.

The second differentiator is the business-school pipeline itself. McIntire has a very polished reputation in finance recruiting, and the school has a history of students targeting investment banking through structured clubs, alumni mentorship, and a recruiting culture that is already heavily oriented toward those jobs. That kind of concentration can make it easier to find peers, upperclassmen, and organizations that know the process cold.

UT Austin is still a very real path to investment banking, especially through McCombs, and it can be excellent for Texas offices in Houston, Dallas, and Austin. It is particularly strong if you are interested in energy banking, given UT’s ties to the Texas energy and finance market. But for pure breadth of undergraduate IB placement and especially for the classic New York pipeline, UVA tends to have the edge.

A practical way to think about it is that UT gives you strong access to Texas finance with some reach beyond, while UVA has a more entrenched national reputation in undergrad IB recruiting circles. For a student choosing strictly on investment banking pipeline, UVA is the one I would lean toward.
