Is William & Mary or Penn State more fun for undergraduates?

Penn State tends to feel more fun for undergraduates if by fun you mean a bigger, more visibly energetic campus social scene. Its size, school spirit, major athletics culture, and constant stream of events make student life feel lively in a way William & Mary usually does not. A lot of students experience Penn State as the more outwardly social campus, with weekends, clubs, traditions, and football culture creating built-in momentum.

One major difference is the scale of campus life. Penn State has a huge student body and a classic Big Ten atmosphere, so there is almost always something happening, whether that is a game, a club event, a concert, or just a crowded social weekend. That creates an easier environment for students who want spontaneous activity and a campus that feels busy all the time.

William & Mary is more low-key, smaller, and more intimate. Students often like it a lot, but the fun there is usually less centered on big campus energy and more on close friend groups, traditions, and a community feel. It can be enjoyable in a quieter, more personal way, but it is not usually the school people picture when they want a highly active, high-volume social scene.

Another concrete difference is sports culture. At Penn State, athletics, especially football, shape a lot of the undergraduate experience and give the campus a strong shared identity. William & Mary has school spirit too, but sports are much less central to daily student life, so the social atmosphere usually feels calmer and less intense.

The surrounding environment matters too. State College is very much a college town built around Penn State, which amplifies the undergrad experience. Williamsburg has charm and history, but William & Mary blends more with the town and tends to feel less like an all-encompassing student bubble.
