Dartmouth has the stronger campus life for most undergraduates who want a lively, cohesive, and social residential experience. Its undergraduate focus, residential House system, and the fact that the college is in a small town mean student life is concentrated on campus in a way that tends to create more shared traditions and stronger day-to-day community. Case Western can absolutely be supportive and engaging, but its campus atmosphere is usually more decentralized.

One big difference is how much of student life happens on campus. At Dartmouth, Hanover’s smaller setting pushes a lot of social activity, events, and routines inward, so students often describe campus as tight-knit and high-energy, with visible school spirit around athletics, traditions, and weekend life. At Case Western, being in Cleveland gives students access to museums, restaurants, and city opportunities, which is a real plus, but it also means the social scene is less centered around one unified campus culture.

Another differentiator is undergraduate culture. Dartmouth is very undergraduate-oriented, and that shapes everything from advising to traditions to the way students interact in residence halls and student organizations. Case Western has a more mixed academic environment with a major research presence and a student body often described as more academically driven than socially collective, so the sense of one shared campus identity can feel weaker.

Finding your people is possible at both schools, but it tends to happen differently. Dartmouth often makes that process easier because residential life, student groups, and campus traditions overlap so much, creating more repeated interaction. At Case Western, students often find close communities through majors, clubs, pre-professional activities, or specific friend groups rather than through a campus-wide social culture.
