Which is generally considered more prestigious: Harvey Mudd College or Princeton University?

Princeton University is more widely viewed as the more prestigious school overall. It has broader name recognition across the U.S. and internationally, a long-established reputation as an Ivy League university, and visibility that extends well beyond academics into public life, finance, law, policy, and graduate admissions.

One big reason is simple public recognition. Princeton is a household name in a way Harvey Mudd is not, especially among people outside STEM or college admissions circles. When people talk about institutional prestige in a general sense, brand familiarity matters a lot, and Princeton carries that instantly across many fields and regions.

Another difference is scope.
