Is Harvey Mudd or Georgetown considered more prestigious overall?
I’m trying to compare these two schools because I’m deciding where to focus my applications. I know they’re very different, but I keep hearing both names come up as highly respected.
I’m mostly trying to understand how people generally view their prestige overall, especially outside of just one major or field.

Neither is flatly “more prestigious overall” in every context. Georgetown has broader name recognition with the general public, especially because of its long-standing reputation in politics, international relations, government, business, and law-adjacent circles. Harvey Mudd is more of a high-prestige specialist school: in STEM, especially among people familiar with engineering, math, computer science, and elite small colleges, it carries exceptional respect.
For a student who cares about how the school name lands across many industries and with people who are not deep in academia, Georgetown usually has the wider prestige footprint. It is a nationally visible university with strong recognition in Washington, DC, on the East Coast, and in fields tied to policy, finance, consulting, and public service. Outside of STEM-focused audiences, more people are likely to know Georgetown immediately.
Harvey Mudd appeals more to the student who wants very high academic esteem in technical spaces and is comfortable with a school that is famous in the right circles rather than famous everywhere. Its undergraduate focus, intense curriculum, and place within the Claremont Colleges give it a reputation for rigor that is unusually strong for such a small institution. Among employers and graduate programs in STEM, Harvey Mudd’s name often carries serious weight even if the average person has never heard of it.
So the answer depends on what you mean by “overall.” If you mean broad public recognition and cross-field visibility, Georgetown comes out ahead. If you mean concentrated academic prestige in STEM, Harvey Mudd can absolutely match or exceed Georgetown in the settings that matter most for technical students.
