Are Colgate and Middlebury worth the price for undergraduate students?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that you would be paying premium private-college prices for two schools that do offer real strengths, but the value depends heavily on your financial aid and on whether you want the specific kind of undergraduate experience each one is known for. Colgate stands out for a close-knit residential campus, strong alumni loyalty, and solid outcomes in consulting, finance, and other professional paths. Middlebury has a particularly strong reputation for languages, international focus, environmental studies, and placement into fellowships, policy, education, and some finance and consulting roles as well.

At full price, both are expensive enough that they are not automatically “worth it” for every student. These are colleges where the draw is less about flashy graduate programs or urban access and more about small classes, strong faculty attention, writing-heavy academics, and alumni networks that can be quite responsive. That can absolutely pay off, but it is most convincing when your family is not taking on major debt.

Middlebury often gets extra value points from students who want its distinctive academic identity. Its language schools, global orientation, and environmental ethos are not just branding points, and employers and grad programs do recognize the school. Colgate’s value is often strongest for students who want a traditional liberal arts experience with a very engaged alumni base and a polished pipeline into business, law, and other professional directions.

In practical terms, I would be cautious about paying full price at either school if a much cheaper option gives you similar academic opportunities without heavy borrowing. If the net cost is manageable, both can justify their price because they do deliver strong teaching, meaningful faculty access, and real post-college support. Between the two, Middlebury usually has a slightly more distinctive national academic identity, while Colgate’s appeal is often tied more to student experience and alumni network strength.
