Which school is better for investment banking: Northwestern or NYU?

For investment banking specifically, NYU usually has the clearer built-in pipeline. If your goal is to maximize direct exposure to banking as early as possible, NYU has an edge.

NYU fits the student who wants to be immersed in finance from the start and is comfortable with a more pre-professional environment. At Stern especially, you will be surrounded by a large number of classmates targeting banking, private equity, sales and trading, and related roles, which can be motivating but also intense. The location matters a lot here because informational interviews, networking events, and part-time opportunities are simply more accessible when firms are nearby.

Northwestern is still very strong and absolutely places students into top banks, especially through its alumni base and strong overall reputation. It tends to suit the student who wants a more traditional campus experience, broader academic flexibility, and a slightly less finance-saturated culture while still keeping banking very much on the table. Northwestern students do well in recruiting, but the path can feel a bit less automatic than it does at NYU because you are not in the middle of Manhattan’s finance ecosystem every day.

If you are comparing pure investment banking access, NYU is more often the school people point to first. If you want banking but also care a lot about having a classic residential college environment and more separation from a nonstop career-focused atmosphere, Northwestern can be the more appealing place while still giving you a real shot at the same industry.
