How do undergraduate research opportunities compare at University of Washington and Harvard?

I’m trying to understand how undergraduate research access differs between these two schools. I know both have strong academics, but I’m more interested in how easy it is to find research labs, get involved early, and build relationships with faculty.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus access. University of Washington offers an enormous research ecosystem, especially in medicine, engineering, public health, and computer science, but that size can make early access feel more self-directed and competitive. Harvard also has very deep research resources, yet undergraduates often find the path to faculty mentorship more structured and personal because the college is smaller and advising systems for undergrads are tightly built around research placement.

At UW, the upside is breadth. There are labs across the main Seattle campus, the medical school, affiliated hospitals, and nearby research institutes, so the number of possible opportunities is huge. For a motivated student who is comfortable emailing labs, attending office hours, and building connections gradually, UW can be excellent, especially if you want exposure to large-scale, high-impact research settings.

The harder part at UW is that undergrads are one group inside a very large public research university. Intro courses can be big, faculty may be less immediately accessible in the first year, and some labs prioritize students who already have coursework or technical skills. It is absolutely possible to get involved early, but students often need to be proactive and persistent.

Harvard tends to make undergraduate research feel more built into the college experience from the start. There are well-known funding programs, strong support for term-time and summer research, and a culture where working closely with faculty is a very normal undergraduate path. Because the undergraduate population is smaller, it can be easier to become known by professors, and that matters a lot for getting into labs and building long-term mentorship.

Harvard also benefits from dense connections across its schools, teaching hospitals, and institutes in the Boston area. That creates a wide research network similar to UW in quality, but with more of the undergraduate-facing structure already in place.
