Arizona State vs UT Austin for value: which college offers better return on investment?

For return on investment, UT Austin usually comes out ahead if you can attend at something close to in-state cost. It has a stronger national reputation, very deep recruiting in Texas, and direct access to one of the country’s best job markets in Austin, especially for tech, business, engineering, and government-related work. Arizona State can still be an excellent value, particularly if you receive a major merit scholarship or pay much less there than you would at UT.

UT Austin makes the most sense for a student who wants the strongest combination of brand value and recruiting power. Employers know UT well, and its location matters: Austin has a dense internship market with startups, major tech firms, state agencies, consulting, and finance opportunities. That does not mean internships are automatic, but the school’s network and local economy give you a lot to work with.

ASU is the smarter value choice for a student who has a significantly lower net price there, wants a large university with broad access to opportunities, and is comfortable being proactive. ASU has real strengths in areas like business, engineering, journalism, and innovation-focused programs, and Phoenix is a growing metro with internships and job options. The catch is that students often need to be more intentional about seeking out the top opportunities rather than relying on school name alone.

So the key variable is net cost, not sticker price. If UT Austin would cost only a little more than ASU, UT usually offers the stronger ROI. If ASU gives you a much cheaper path, especially through merit aid or honors benefits, the gap can close quickly and ASU may be the more financially sensible pick.
