The biggest difference is scale. Michigan has true big-school energy: a huge student body, major sports culture, large lecture classes early on, and what feels like endless clubs, events, and subcommunities. That can be exciting because there is always something happening, but it can also mean you have to be more proactive to make a giant place feel personal. Tulane is much easier to navigate socially and physically, so students often describe it as easier to find your people quickly.

School spirit is another major separator. Michigan has one of the strongest alumni and athletics cultures in the country, and game days are a real part of campus identity even for students who are not sports fanatics. Tulane has school spirit too, especially around campus traditions and Mardi Gras season, but the emotional center of student life is less tied to athletics and more tied to the surrounding city and the social scene that comes with it.

The campus environment also feels very different. Michigan is in Ann Arbor, which is an excellent college town built around the university, so student life is concentrated and campus-centered. For some students that feels vibrant and distinctive; for others, it can make campus feel a little less all-encompassing.

Socially, both can be active, but the tone differs. Michigan has more variety because of its size, so you can find everything from intense school-spirit culture to quieter niche communities. Tulane often comes across as more immediately social and outgoing, with a stronger overlap between campus life and city life.
