Is UCLA or Arizona State a better value for college?
I’m trying to compare schools based on overall value, not just prestige. I know UCLA is more selective and Arizona State is usually more affordable, but I’m wondering how people think about the balance of cost, academics, and job opportunities.
I’m mainly trying to figure out which school tends to give the better return for the money if someone is choosing between them.

The biggest practical tradeoff is paying more up front for UCLA’s stronger brand and tighter access to high-demand opportunities versus paying less at Arizona State for a larger, more flexible university experience. Arizona State often wins on affordability, merit aid, honors options like Barrett, and the chance to graduate with less debt.
If you are comparing pure return on investment, UCLA tends to come out ahead when the price gap is not enormous, especially for California residents. Its location in Los Angeles, strong alumni network, and recruiting pipeline into major employers can create real advantages in internships and first-job access. That matters because value is not just tuition, but also what doors open while you are enrolled.
Arizona State becomes very compelling when the cost difference is large. For out-of-state students, ASU can be a much better financial decision if it offers substantial scholarships and UCLA would require heavy borrowing. ASU is a huge research university with solid programs in engineering, business, journalism, computer science, and sustainability, and motivated students can build excellent outcomes there, particularly through Barrett Honors College, undergraduate research, and Phoenix-area internships.
A useful way to think about it is debt load first, then major. If UCLA would leave you with modest debt and you want the broadest academic reputation and recruiting reach, its value is hard to beat. If ASU would save you tens of thousands of dollars, that savings can outweigh UCLA’s prestige boost, especially in majors where outcomes depend more on internships, skills, and grades than on school name alone.
So the better value is usually UCLA for in-state students or anyone facing a manageable price difference, while ASU often has the stronger money-to-outcome case when it is dramatically cheaper.
