Is UCLA or Penn State the better value for engineering?

The biggest practical tradeoff is cost versus reach: UCLA often carries more national prestige and a very strong engineering reputation, while Penn State can be the smarter financial value if your net cost is meaningfully lower. Both schools place graduates into solid engineering jobs, both have large alumni networks, and neither is the kind of school where an engineering degree will be dismissed by employers.

For return on investment, the first question is whether you would be paying in-state or out-of-state rates at each school. If you are in-state for UCLA, that is hard to beat because you get a top public engineering education at a much lower price than most peers. If you are out-of-state for UCLA and Penn State is offering a lower total cost, the value case can shift quickly toward Penn State.

UCLA tends to have a bit more brand pull nationally and especially strong recognition in California, tech, and certain highly selective recruiting pipelines. It also benefits from being in Los Angeles, with access to internships in aerospace, tech, entertainment tech, biotech, and startups during the school year. That can matter because easier access to internships often improves ROI more than small differences in ranking.

Penn State’s engineering college is also well respected, very broad, and backed by an enormous alumni network that is especially powerful in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. For many students, Penn State delivers excellent outcomes at a more manageable price, particularly if merit aid or residency makes it clearly cheaper. In engineering, graduating with less debt often matters more than a modest prestige difference.

My honest view is this: UCLA is the better value only if the price is reasonably close, or if you qualify for California in-state tuition. If Penn State would cost substantially less, it is very likely the better overall value for engineering because the career outcomes are still strong enough that the savings will probably outweigh UCLA’s extra name recognition.
