Is Columbia or Washington University in St. Louis better for finance recruiting and career outcomes?

I’m a high school senior trying to narrow down colleges, and both Columbia and Washington University in St. Louis are on my list. I’m interested in finance and care most about which school would give me better recruiting, internship, and job opportunities for that path.

I’m not really asking about overall prestige, just which one tends to be stronger for finance goals.

Columbia has the edge for finance recruiting and career outcomes. Its biggest advantage is location: being in New York puts students much closer to investment banks, buy-side firms, networking events, and in-semester internship opportunities that are much harder to access from St. Louis. Columbia also has a very deep alumni presence on Wall Street, which matters a lot in finance because recruiting often runs through student clubs, referrals, and alumni outreach.

Another concrete difference is how recruiting pipelines tend to work. At Columbia, the school is a frequent target for major banks and well-known finance employers, and students can plug into recruiting early through campus organizations, info sessions, and coffee chats that happen constantly in the city. That does not mean every Columbia student has an easy path, but the volume and proximity of opportunities are unusually strong.

WashU can still absolutely place students into finance, especially strong students who are proactive, but the path is usually less built around immediate access to New York recruiting. You are more likely to need more deliberate networking, travel, and planning for internships and interviews, especially for front-office roles in investment banking or private equity. WashU has a solid reputation and successful alumni, just not the same density of finance infrastructure around the school.

For pure finance outcomes, especially if you mean Wall Street style recruiting, Columbia is the more powerful platform. WashU is still a very good option, but in a head-to-head comparison focused specifically on finance access, Columbia tends to open more doors more quickly.
