Carnegie Mellon vs Northwestern for AI research: which is better for undergrad opportunities?

I’m trying to choose between Carnegie Mellon and Northwestern and I’m especially interested in getting involved in AI research as an undergrad.

I know both schools are strong overall, but I want to understand which one is generally better for finding research opportunities, working with faculty, and getting practical experience in AI early on.

Carnegie Mellon has the edge for undergraduate AI research opportunities. Its AI ecosystem is unusually deep at the undergrad level because AI is a central institutional strength, not just one area within computer science, and students benefit from direct proximity to the School of Computer Science, the Machine Learning Department, and major research centers focused on robotics, language technologies, computer vision, and human-AI interaction.

One concrete difference is the sheer density of AI-focused labs and faculty at CMU. Northwestern is definitely strong, and an undergrad there can absolutely do meaningful AI research, especially in interdisciplinary spaces like medicine, engineering, learning sciences, or human-computer interaction. In some cases, that can mean less internal competition within pure CS than at CMU. But if your main goal is maximizing the number, visibility, and intensity of AI-specific research pathways as an undergraduate, CMU offers a more concentrated environment for that.
