Carnegie Mellon vs Cornell for software engineering: which is better for undergrad?

I’m trying to decide between Carnegie Mellon and Cornell for software engineering as a high school senior. Both seem strong, but I’m not sure how they compare for undergrad teaching, internship prep, and overall opportunities in software.

I’m mainly looking for a practical comparison of which school has the stronger software engineering program for students who want to work in tech after college.

Carnegie Mellon has the edge for undergraduate software engineering. Its School of Computer Science is unusually undergraduate-accessible for a place with that level of depth, and CMU is one of the few schools where software engineering is a clearly built-out academic path rather than just a CS interest area. For a student focused specifically on preparing for software work after college, the curriculum, recruiting ecosystem, and culture line up very directly with that goal.

The biggest differentiator is the program itself. CMU offers a more specialized and structured route into software engineering, with coursework that goes beyond learning theory and algorithms into larger-scale system design, collaborative development, and real software-building practice. Cornell gives you a larger university with more breadth across colleges and disciplines, which is valuable if you want more flexibility or think you may drift toward adjacent areas.
