University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign vs Fordham for New York recruiting

For New York recruiting specifically, Fordham usually has the more immediate advantage because it is in New York City and has deep day-to-day connections there. Being at Lincoln Center or Rose Hill makes it much easier to attend employer events, do in-semester internships, meet alumni in person, and build a network before senior year. UIUC has a larger national footprint and a very strong alumni base, but its recruiting strength is more spread across multiple markets rather than centered in New York.

Fordham tends to fit the student who wants proximity to NYC to be part of the college experience itself, not just the post-grad destination. If you are the kind of student who will actively use the city, meaning coffee chats, semester internships, student org treks, and frequent alumni events, Fordham can translate location into real networking momentum. That matters a lot in fields where relationship-building and early exposure help, especially finance, media, communications, marketing, and many business-adjacent roles.

UIUC makes more sense for the student who wants a bigger campus environment, broader school spirit, and access to a very large alumni network that extends well beyond one city. In engineering, computer science, accounting, and some other technical or quantitatively oriented paths, UIUC’s reputation can carry substantial weight nationally, including with employers in New York. The tradeoff is that you usually have to be more intentional about getting there through summer internships, alumni outreach, and targeted recruiting trips rather than relying on local access during the school year.

So for pure New York networking access, Fordham has the cleaner edge. For a student in a highly portable, nationally recruited field who values a large public research university and is comfortable building a New York path more independently, UIUC can still open plenty of doors there.
