Northwestern vs Tufts for city life: which is better?

For day-to-day city life, Tufts is usually the more connected experience. At Northwestern, you do have Chicago nearby, but Evanston feels more like its own suburban college town, and getting into the city is more of a separate trip than an everyday extension of campus.

The biggest difference is what surrounds you when you leave campus on foot. At Tufts, students can quickly reach dense, active areas with restaurants, cafes, concerts, shops, and public transit that tie into the broader Boston area. The campus is not in the middle of downtown Boston, but it feels plugged into an actual metro network in a way that supports spontaneous off-campus plans.

Northwestern has a very nice location, but the feel is different. Evanston has plenty of places to eat, a walkable downtown, and lakefront access, so it is not isolated at all. Still, it reads more as a polished college suburb than a fully urban environment, and Chicago access is real but less immediate for everyday city life unless you make a point of heading in.

Another concrete separator is transit culture. Around Tufts, using the T is a normal part of student life, and Boston-area neighborhoods are close enough that the city can become part of your regular routine. At Northwestern, students certainly go to Chicago, but campus life tends to stay centered in Evanston more often.
