Northwestern vs. Bowdoin: Which College Is Better for Outdoor Activities?

Bowdoin is the more natural fit for a student who wants outdoor recreation to be a regular part of campus life, especially hiking, camping, paddling, and winter trips. Its Brunswick, Maine location places students close to the Maine coast and within reach of forests, rivers, state parks, and mountain areas, while the Bowdoin Outing Club organizes trips and provides a visible community for getting outside.

A Bowdoin student can build a routine around sea kayaking, canoeing, trail outings, climbing, camping, and cross-country or downhill skiing excursions. Major mountain destinations are not immediately adjacent to campus, so ski weekends and serious hiking often require organized transportation or a car, but Maine offers far more nearby wilderness than Evanston does.

Northwestern suits a student whose idea of outdoor life centers on Lake Michigan and an active city-campus setting. The Evanston campus has a lakefront, beaches, and access to sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, running, cycling, and waterfront recreation when weather permits. Its location also makes it easy to combine outdoor time with Chicago’s lakefront paths, parks, and urban activities.

For hiking, overnight camping, and skiing, however, Northwestern students need to be more intentional. Meaningful trails, wilderness camping, and downhill ski areas are typically day-trip or weekend destinations rather than extensions of daily campus life. Northwestern has outdoor recreation programming and student groups, but its setting is much more urban and lakefront than wilderness-oriented.

Choose Bowdoin for frequent access to Maine’s coast and backcountry culture. Choose Northwestern if Lake Michigan activities, city access, and occasional organized outdoor getaways matter more than being surrounded by readily accessible natural terrain.
