Is Northwestern or Cornell better for switching majors after freshman year?

Northwestern is usually the more flexible place for a student who expects to change direction after freshman year. It is well known for encouraging exploration across schools and departments, and students can often take classes in multiple areas before locking into a path. Northwestern also makes internal transfer and double major options relatively common compared with universities where each undergraduate college is more separate.

Cornell can work well too, but it depends much more on where you start and where you hope to move. Cornell’s undergraduate colleges have distinct requirements and admissions processes, so changing majors within the same college is often much simpler than transferring from one college to another.

Northwestern tends to suit the student who wants to sample broadly across humanities, social sciences, sciences, journalism, music, or engineering and keep several options open. The quarter system also helps with exploration because you can fit more classes into your first year and test out interests without falling behind as easily. If you are the kind of student who can imagine moving from economics to psychology, or from engineering to learning sciences, Northwestern is built in a way that often makes that less disruptive.

Cornell is a good match for someone who has a few related interests and is comfortable navigating college-specific rules. It offers a huge range of fields, but that breadth comes with more structure.
