Colorado State University is the better pick for most outdoorsy students. Fort Collins has exceptionally easy access to hiking, trail running, mountain biking, climbing, and camping, and the culture around CSU is deeply tied to being outside on a regular basis, not just on occasional weekend trips. You are also much closer to a huge range of public lands and Front Range recreation areas, which makes spontaneous outdoor plans much easier.

One big differentiator is the sheer day-to-day outdoor access. From CSU, students can get to Horsetooth Reservoir and nearby trails very quickly, and Rocky Mountain National Park is close enough to be a realistic weekend destination. That matters because the best outdoor college experience is often less about postcard scenery and more about whether you can fit nature into an ordinary Tuesday afternoon.

Another difference is the outdoor lifestyle built into the surrounding town. Fort Collins is very bike-friendly, active, and known for a strong recreation culture, so the outdoors tends to feel woven into student life rather than separated from it. CSU also has a well-established Campus Recreation and Outdoor Program setup, which helps students find trips, gear, and communities without needing to already know people.

Vermont is still a very appealing choice, especially for skiing and a classic New England outdoors feel. Burlington gives you access to Lake Champlain, nearby mountains, and a strong winter culture, so students who love snow sports and four-season scenery may find it especially appealing. But if the question is which school more consistently supports an outdoors-heavy college routine across the full year, CSU usually has the edge.
