Georgetown vs University of Amsterdam for city life: which has a better urban student experience?

The University of Amsterdam offers the more immersive urban student experience. Its buildings are woven directly into central Amsterdam rather than set apart in a traditional campus, and students usually move through the city by bike, tram, or on foot as part of everyday life. Georgetown gives you access to Washington, D.C., but the university itself feels more enclosed and residential, with the Georgetown neighborhood somewhat separated from the city’s fastest-moving core.

One big difference is how the school sits inside the city. UvA is deeply integrated into Amsterdam, with academic buildings, libraries, cafes, canals, housing, and nightlife all mixed into the same urban fabric. For many students, there is not much distinction between going to school and being in the city, because the city is effectively the campus.

Transportation also pushes Amsterdam ahead for daily student life. Getting around is extremely easy without a car, and biking is not just possible but normal, which makes the city feel accessible in a very immediate way. Georgetown students can use D.C. transit and buses, but the campus is not right on top of the Metro in the way many students expect, so city access can feel a little less seamless on a day-to-day basis.

Off-campus life is another separator. Amsterdam tends to offer a denser, more continuous student-city rhythm, with cafes, public spaces, museums, nightlife, and neighborhood activity all close together. Georgetown has a beautiful location and D.C. offers plenty to do, especially internships, politics, museums, and restaurants, but the student experience often feels split between campus life in Georgetown and outings into the broader city rather than fully merged with it.
