UC Davis vs University of Richmond for pre med: which is better for undergrad preparation?

I’m trying to choose between UC Davis and the University of Richmond and I want to study pre med. I care most about getting a strong GPA, good research or clinical opportunities, and being prepared for med school applications.

Both schools seem like good options, but I’m not sure which one would be the better environment for pre med overall.

For pre-med specifically, UC Davis has the edge for undergraduate preparation because it offers unusually deep access to medical, research, and health-related infrastructure right around campus. The biggest advantage is proximity to the UC Davis School of Medicine, UC Davis Health, and a major teaching hospital system, which creates more built-in pathways to labs, clinical exposure, physician connections, and public health work. Davis also has a very broad life sciences ecosystem, so students interested in biology, neuroscience, nutrition, psychology, or related fields usually have many ways to line up coursework with pre-med goals.

The most important counterpoint is GPA. Richmond’s smaller classes, liberal arts setting, and closer faculty contact can make it easier for some students to get academic support, build mentoring relationships, and earn strong recommendation letters. In a pre-med track, that matters a lot. At Davis, introductory STEM classes can be larger and feel more competitive, so maintaining a top GPA may require more self-direction and comfort navigating a bigger public university environment.

On research and clinical opportunities, Davis is hard to beat because the scale is simply larger. There are more labs, more graduate and professional school connections, and more nearby health systems tied to the university. That does not mean Richmond lacks opportunities, but at Richmond you may need to be more proactive in piecing together hospital volunteering, shadowing, or summer research, especially compared with Davis’s direct medical-school-linked environment.

For med school applications, both can work well, but they prepare students in different ways. Richmond may offer a more personal advising experience and stronger day-to-day faculty access, while Davis gives you a more robust pre-health pipeline and a clearer runway into research and clinical experiences. If your main priority is the fullest pre-med ecosystem, UC Davis stands out.
