UC Davis vs Boston University for pre-vet: which is better for undergraduate preparation?

UC Davis is the better pick for undergraduate pre-vet preparation. The biggest reason is that Davis has one of the country’s most established veterinary ecosystems, including its School of Veterinary Medicine, a veterinary teaching hospital, and extensive animal science and agricultural resources that create unusually direct access to animal-related coursework and experience.

The clearest differentiator is hands-on animal exposure. At UC Davis, undergraduates can study Animal Science, work with livestock and equine programs, and find pre-vet clubs, labs, and hospital-related opportunities in an environment built around animal health. At Boston University, you can absolutely complete pre-vet requirements, but the campus is urban and does not have the same built-in access to large-animal, farm, or vet-school-adjacent experiences.

Research is another place where Davis has an edge for this goal. Because UC Davis has a full vet school and strong programs in animal biology, agriculture, wildlife, and related biosciences, there are simply more labs and faculty whose work connects directly to veterinary medicine. BU has solid science research, especially in biology and biomedical fields, but it is less specifically centered on animal and veterinary pathways.

Advising and peer environment also favor Davis for pre-vet. You would be surrounded by more students pursuing animal science and veterinary medicine, which usually means more targeted clubs, mentoring, and course planning geared toward vet school admissions. At BU, pre-health advising is strong, but much of the infrastructure is more oriented toward human medicine, research, and urban clinical experiences.

Boston University only starts to look more appealing here if you strongly prefer a city campus and think you may pivot away from veterinary medicine into a different pre-health or biomedical track. But for straightforward undergraduate preparation for vet school, UC Davis offers a much more natural runway.
