Cornell vs Caltech for STEM opportunities: which has more research and internship options for undergrads?

I’m a junior looking at both schools because I want strong STEM opportunities as an undergrad. Cornell seems bigger with a lot of departments, while Caltech seems more focused on science and engineering.

I’m trying to understand which one generally gives students more chances to do research, work with professors, and find internship opportunities in STEM.

The biggest practical tradeoff is breadth versus intensity. Cornell gives you a much larger STEM ecosystem, with many departments, labs, interdisciplinary centers, and a bigger alumni and employer network, while Caltech offers a much smaller environment where undergrads often get unusually direct access to faculty and research early on because research is so central to the school’s identity.

For pure access to hands-on research with professors, Caltech is hard to beat. Its size means undergraduates are a very visible part of the academic community, and the SURF program is one of the clearest built-in undergraduate research structures at any STEM-focused school. If your main goal is to be in labs quickly, work closely with faculty, and be surrounded almost entirely by students deeply focused on science and engineering, Caltech has a real edge.

Cornell, though, may offer more total opportunities simply because it is so much larger and more varied. You have engineering, physical sciences, computing, biology, agriculture and life sciences, human ecology, and major cross-disciplinary institutes, which creates a wide range of possible projects and applied work. That scale also helps with internships: Cornell tends to have broader recruiting across industries, from software and hardware to biotech, energy, materials, robotics, and quantitative fields.

On the internship side, Caltech benefits from proximity and connections to major Southern California research and aerospace ecosystems. That can be excellent, but the set of opportunities is narrower and more specialized than Cornell’s wider employer pipeline.

So if the question is who has more research and internship options overall, Cornell probably wins on sheer volume and variety. If the question is where an undergrad is more likely to have close, research-heavy faculty engagement as a normal part of the undergraduate experience, Caltech is the more distinctive choice.
