Which is better for college application strategy: UIUC or Cornell?

Cornell belongs in a more reach-heavy category for most applicants, while UIUC can vary much more by major and residency, so for application strategy they usually should not be treated the same way. Cornell is an Ivy with very selective admissions across its colleges, and UIUC, although also highly respected, has a more uneven landscape where some programs are far harder to enter than the university overall. For building a balanced list, Cornell is typically a reach, while UIUC might be a reach, target, or even closer to a likely depending on what you study and whether you are in-state.

The biggest differentiator is major-level selectivity at UIUC. Programs like computer science, engineering, and business can be extremely competitive, to the point that UIUC may function strategically more like a reach than many students expect. On the other hand, some less impacted majors can be more accessible, especially for Illinois residents. Cornell is also school-specific, but it remains highly selective across the board, so it is harder to place anywhere other than the reach category.
