How should I tailor my admissions strategy for UIUC versus Penn State?

I’m a high school senior applying to both UIUC and Penn State for a STEM major. Since their admissions processes and academic strengths seem different, I’m trying to understand how my overall application strategy should differ between the two schools.

For UIUC, build a highly major-specific application, especially if you are applying to engineering, computer science, or another capacity-constrained STEM program. Show evidence beyond saying you enjoy STEM: a design project, research question, coding tool, engineering competition role, or sustained problem you have explored is more persuasive.

Do not treat a less selective-sounding major as a placeholder unless you would genuinely be prepared to study it. For STEM applicants, strong preparation in the most rigorous math and science courses available at your school matters, with particular attention to the subjects connected to your intended field.

For Penn State, focus on presenting a solid academic record while making deliberate choices about campus and major. University Park STEM programs can be competitive, so list it only if it is your real preference, while considering whether another campus or start option is one you would actually welcome.

Use Penn State’s optional personal statement to explain a meaningful circumstance or add context not visible in grades and activities; it does not need to repeat your Common App essay. Penn State can suit a student who values a large university with multiple campus pathways and room to explore before or alongside a STEM specialization.
