University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign vs USC for media studies: which is better for undergraduate career opportunities?

I’m trying to decide between UIUC and USC for media studies, and I keep seeing both schools mentioned for media-related careers. I’m mainly interested in which one would give me better internship and job opportunities after graduation.

I’m a high school senior looking at schools where I could build skills and make connections in media, so I want to understand how each school is viewed by employers in that field.

USC has the clearer edge for undergraduate career opportunities in media studies. Its Los Angeles location puts you near major film, television, digital media, music, sports, and entertainment companies during the school year, and USC’s media and communications programs are tightly connected to that ecosystem. For an undergrad who wants internships, alumni access, and early industry exposure, that proximity matters a lot.

The biggest differentiator is access to internships while classes are in session. At USC, students can more realistically intern part time with studios, production companies, agencies, streaming firms, sports media organizations, and entertainment startups without needing to leave campus life behind. UIUC can absolutely lead to strong outcomes, but many media opportunities there are more likely to happen in the summer or require more deliberate off campus networking because Urbana-Champaign is not a major media hub.

The second difference is industry network density. USC has a very visible alumni presence across entertainment, communications, and adjacent creative industries, and employers in those spaces are used to recruiting USC students. That does not mean UIUC lacks a network, but USC’s is especially concentrated in the exact sectors many media studies students target first, which can make informational interviews, referrals, and first-job entry points easier to find.

A third factor is how employers tend to read the two schools for this field. UIUC has an excellent overall academic reputation and strong outcomes in many areas, especially technical and analytical ones, so it can be a smart choice if your interests lean toward digital strategy, advertising analytics, or media plus business or tech. But for traditional media-industry pathways and entertainment-centered careers, USC usually carries more direct professional momentum at the undergraduate level.

Cost can still change the answer in practice. If UIUC is dramatically cheaper, the gap may not be large enough to justify a much higher price, especially in media where early-career salaries can vary widely.
