Northeastern vs USC for media careers: which is better for internships and networking?

I’m trying to decide between Northeastern and USC because I want to go into media after college, probably something involving production, entertainment, or digital media.

Both seem strong in different ways, and I know location and alumni networks can matter a lot in media. I’m mostly trying to understand which school is generally better for building internships, connections, and job opportunities in the industry.

The biggest practical tradeoff is structured access versus industry proximity. Northeastern gives you a very built-in internship pipeline through its co-op system, which can make it easier to graduate with multiple substantial work experiences, while USC places you in Los Angeles, where the entertainment and production world is concentrated and where informal networking often matters a lot. For media careers, both can work well, but they create opportunities in different ways.

Northeastern is especially appealing if you want a college that actively organizes work experience into your degree. Its co-op model is a real advantage for students who want résumé depth before graduation, and that can be valuable for digital media, marketing-adjacent roles, content production, and media business positions. Boston is a good city for internships too, though it is not as central to film, TV, and entertainment production as Los Angeles.

USC has a major edge in location and alumni reach for entertainment. Being in LA means easier access to studios, production companies, agencies, creators, and part-time internships during the school year, not just in the summer. USC’s network in film, television, and broader entertainment is especially well known, and in media industries where relationships often open doors, that matters a lot.

If your interest leans toward entertainment production, film/TV development, studio roles, or anything that benefits from being physically present in LA, USC is hard to beat. If you are more focused on building a strong portfolio of formal work experiences across digital media, communications, and related fields, Northeastern has a very compelling structure.

Between the two, USC has the stronger networking environment for entertainment media specifically, while Northeastern is outstanding for internship structure.
