Georgetown carries more weight overall for prestige, especially on a resume outside the Northeast and in fields like politics, international affairs, consulting, and some areas of finance. Fordham is well respected, particularly in New York, but it does not usually have the same across-the-board brand recognition.

One big differentiator is national visibility. Georgetown’s name is closely tied to government, public policy, foreign service, and high-level professional pathways, so people in graduate admissions and recruiting often have a clearer sense of its academic environment right away. Fordham has solid recognition, especially for business, pre-law, and liberal arts, but its reputation is more regionally concentrated and less likely to create that instant reaction outside certain circles.

Another difference is how the schools are connected to influential professional networks. Georgetown benefits from deep ties in DC, and a long-standing presence in elite graduate and professional pipelines. Fordham’s New York location is a real advantage for internships and early career experience, especially in business and media, but that is more about access and outcomes than pure prestige.

For grad school admissions, the school name matters some, but performance matters more. A high GPA, strong recommendations, serious research or internship experience, and clear academic direction from Fordham can absolutely beat a weaker Georgetown application.
