Carnegie Mellon vs Vanderbilt for engineering prestige: which is more respected by employers and grad schools?

Carnegie Mellon carries more engineering prestige than Vanderbilt in the eyes of many employers and grad programs. In engineering circles, CMU has a stronger standalone technical reputation, especially in computer science, electrical and computer engineering, robotics, AI, and closely related fields. Vanderbilt is well respected, but its brand is broader and often read as an excellent overall university rather than one of the first names people mention specifically for engineering.

One big reason is depth and visibility within technical industries. CMU has unusually strong ties to engineering-heavy recruiting, major research labs, and project-based technical work, so its name tends to signal a very rigorous engineering environment.

For grad school admissions, CMU also has the edge because faculty at other engineering schools are very familiar with its curriculum, research output, and the level of students it produces. That does not mean a Vanderbilt student is disadvantaged, since strong grades, research, recommendations, and coursework still matter more than name alone. But between these two names, CMU usually has more immediate recognition as an engineering powerhouse.

The main caveat is that engineering prestige is not identical across every subfield. If you are looking at biomedical engineering or areas where Vanderbilt has strong research and medical-center connections, the gap can narrow somewhat. Still, on pure engineering reputation across internships, technical employers, and graduate engineering departments, Carnegie Mellon is the more respected name.
